You don’t understand - whatever they do, it’s not enough. So there, now you know. Move on.

  2. JohnBernardBooks on February 27th, 2008 at 9:03 am

“In other words, there will be NO affirmative action for the Executive Committee.” you meant amnesty right?

  3. radiovixen on February 27th, 2008 at 9:03 am

HLSR doesn’t need their money anyway. They are making a ton regardless.

  4. David Benzion on February 27th, 2008 at 9:16 am

Kinky Friedman and I are organizing to respond to HLSR disrespect for Jews… our studies indicate that fully .07% of HLSR attendees are Jews, yet only .05% of leadership positions are held by Members of the Tribe.

Also, we want all barbecue to be certified kosher, for the entire event to closed down from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, and for the creation of a “Go Hebrew!” night featuring Matisyahu.

  5. Dov on February 27th, 2008 at 9:20 am

    David

    Coming from another heeb

    You’re Meshuggana

    And no more freaking pigs!

  7. JohnBernardBooks on February 27th, 2008 at 9:26 am

how do you bar-B-que corned beef?….I hope that wasn’t disrespectful….if it was mea culpa.

  8. raiderdav on February 27th, 2008 at 9:34 am

Matisyahu was just here not long ago - I saw him open up for 311. He was awesome if you missed it David. Great performer (and I’m not Jewish).

From what I have read, the Hispanic groups that are perfroming are the hottest selling groups at this time. If they are selling more albums than traditional tejano groups, doesn’t that mean that they have EARNED the right to perform. On top of that, doesn’t that also mean that there should be a more diverse group of hispanics attending. Not just those who listen to tejano music.

  10. David Benzion on February 27th, 2008 at 9:36 am

Just more evidence that a “Go Hebrew!” night would be a huge success…

  11. G. Miller on February 27th, 2008 at 9:38 am

Maybe the HSLR should change the name of the day to Go Hispanic day. Would that be suffecient to satisfy the boycotters? Naw, probably not. They would still find something to B!T@H about.

  12. Mytur Bin Esderty on February 27th, 2008 at 9:58 am

Maybe they should change the name of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to the “Dynamos.”

  13. blackgirl on February 27th, 2008 at 9:59 am

What about Black Heritage Day - Who is John Legion? What about asking the Temptation to perform?

  14. navymom on February 27th, 2008 at 10:03 am

    WAAHHH WAAAHHH WAAHHHH

As a frequent rodeo attendee, usually going 4 - 8 times each season, I will NOT MISS THE WHINEY ASSED TEJANO FANS.

They got their day, and they still aren’t happy. I say have a bunch of undercover ICE agents there on Tejano Day, wouldn’t THAT be a hoot!?!

  15. Zippy_Slug on February 27th, 2008 at 10:27 am

I WANT MY GO GERMAN DAY!!!

I’m boycotting the rodeo because there is no German day! I want a big oompah band! Or David Hasselhoff! Come on Rodeo organizers! You guys are so racist!

    pansies..

  16. Lawrence C. on February 27th, 2008 at 10:41 am

Big, thanks for covering this. I was so PO’d this morning I posted about this under the wrong thread.

  17. Lawrence C. on February 27th, 2008 at 10:57 am

Big, I wish you would have quoted the asinine comment Mario Gallegos made regarding his culture.

More ethnicity entitlement rhetoric from Sen. Gallegos - “all hat & no cattle.”

Perhaps the good Senator can pull himself away from his lifleong drinking, drugging and philandering and devote an equal amount of time to volunteering for the Rodeo. Maybe he can bring his checkbook and buy the Grand Champion steer three or four times. Maybe then, someone might actually take him seriously.

All this from a guy who spent the last State Senate session on a hospital gurney in Senate Chambers casting votes against the overwhelming will of the people.

Friday, March 7th, is Black Heritage Day at the HLS&R.

  19. blackgirl on February 27th, 2008 at 11:19 am

I know texpat, and the artist is John Legion-or something like that. But since everyone else is complaining, I wanted to put my two cent in. I don’t even know who this guy is and you know what I really don’t care. As long as I get to the BBQ cookoff I can live with the music. I spent the weekend out on a trailride and had a great time. Who performs I don’t really care. Besides if I go and see one of the shows it will be “Brooks & Dunn”.

  20. navymom on February 27th, 2008 at 11:20 am

#3 It’s John LEGEND, not Legion. Dang, I’m white and I knew that! HA

  21. BigJolly on February 27th, 2008 at 11:46 am

    LC,

    You mean this one?

“To not put a Tejano star under the big tent,” Gallegos said, “deprives me and my kids of learning about my culture.”

Yeah, like it’s supposed to be the rodeo’s job to teach his kid. I’m guessin’ his kid is learning a lot from watching his dad.

  22. blackgirl on February 27th, 2008 at 11:52 am

Yes that’s his name John Legend - Thanks navymom.

  23. Robert 1 on February 27th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

To quote that great civil rights leader, Rodney King, “can’t we all just get along”. The rodeo was and is suppose to be a charity thing that raises money for scholarships. They try to provide the best entertainment they can and raise or make as money as they can. This sounds like another case for the “PC” police. Just think how many Asians would go the the rodeo if they had their own night or some act to go see. So if the Hispanics want to give up their night maybe this could be an alternative.

  24. Tektite on February 27th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

It is amazing that these people are crying about the style of music.

The stlye featured this year is duranguense and norteno. Norteno is similar and related to Tejano music!!! Tejano music is a derivitative of Norteno.

Norteno is also called Conjunto Music. Conjunto Music is very common and is also referred to as Norteno. Conjunto, if I remember correctly, is of Texas origin. Many of the great Conjunto music players are from Texas.

In Houston only one AM station plays Tejano Music. It is amazing that these so-called hispanic leaders do not even know the origins of the music they are crying over.

#24 “It is amazing that these so-called hispanic leaders do not even know the origins of the music they are crying over.”
While that maybe true if you look at Ron Paul’s site you will learn he was selected as one of the “50 most influential Tejano leaders” of our time…..

  26. Robert 1 on February 27th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Add on to No. 24: Maybe those so-called Hispanic leaders are looking for some “Tex-Mex” music. They use it in their rhetoric maybe they want it in their music.

  27. american woman on February 27th, 2008 at 2:51 pm

OK now I feel left out. I’m, an angry 58 year old white woman. I want my day!!!! I want everyone to let me move to the front of the mile long lines. I want a beer for $2.00 and I want to hear……The Beatles ( so what half of them are dead) This angry white woman is going to boycott. ( I have no plans to attend anyway)

  28. hefitz on February 27th, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Well, that does it……….I will not be attending the rodeo on Tejano night.

  29. texpat on February 27th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Leroy Shafer must be 112 years old. He was running things at the Fat Stock Show when I was a kid.

“From what I have read, the Hispanic groups that are perfroming are the hottest selling groups at this time. If they are selling more albums than traditional tejano groups, doesn’t that mean that they have EARNED the right to perform.”

No offense, but actually, the answer to your question is “no, they have not earned the right to perform”. I presume that your reference is to the First Amendment (and if not, then your argument becomes even weaker). Consider a high school band/orchestra which has a 20-year history of successive UIL Sweepstakes Awards; do they have a “right” to perform? No. Consider a female porn star who has made two dozen best-selling films; does she have a “right” to perform? No. Consider a group of Scottish bagpipe players who have won national awards; do they have a “right” to perform? No.
The First Amendment provides the right to speak (or otherwise express the participant’s views), but it does not guarantee access to a microphone or television camera. The HLS&R commitee gets to choose, and if they’re halfway smart, they will pick entertainers which will help draw a crowd. It’s this silly little thing called the Free Market at work.
The Tejano artists you mentioned may be best-sellers, but to what size market? And what percentage of that market will change their plans to bring their hard-earned money to the Rodeo and spend it, as compared to the overall percentage of attendees?
Let’s face it: the only reason we have a Tejano Night is because management bowed to public pressure in order to pacify a minority. That doesn’t mean said minority are “bad people”; it just means that catering to them is not necessarily consistent with the primary underlying objectives of HLS&R.
Disclaimer: And no, I do not work (volunteer or otherwise) for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

    #30 - WELL SAID!!!!! THANKS…….

  32. retire05 on February 27th, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Gonzalo Barrientos? How would he even know there was a GoTejano Day at the HLSR? When has he ever been sober enough to know one day from the other?

Barrientos is a clown and should never be allowed in public without a keeper.

  33. carbon-credit on February 27th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Just like Augusta National will one day cave, so will the HLSR…enjoy while you can…

    CC:

Just like Augusta National will one day cave, so will the HLSR…enjoy while you can…

I’m not sure what you mean by your comment, the two situations are entirely different. I’m honestly not sure what these “Leaders” want, except more catering to Hispanics. From the facts available it appears that the only thing they don’t already have is hispanics on the executive committee. I guess they should add some - even though they really haven’t earned it …… but then isn’t that at the root of much of the controversy about illegal immigration?

I WANT MY GO GERMAN DAY!!!

I am with you, sausage on a stick is not enough to represent us. :)

  36. southerntragedy on February 27th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Whaaaa! I’m adopted and don’t know what my heritage is. I can only call myself an American.

I want an “I don’t know my heritage is” day. I guess we could call it IDKMHI day. Not really catchy though, but maybe we could get Jimmy Vaughn to play!

  37. squawkbox on February 27th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

I want a Famous And Retired Truckers day. I wanna hear music from the likes of Ferlin Husky, Boxcar Willie, Dave Dudley and Red Sovine.

  38. squawkbox on February 27th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

AND if I don’t get it I am going to call 50 of my closest friends to meet me at some rodeo officials home and park our tractor trailers in the neighborhood just to make a point. AYYYNNNNDDD you know that where truckers are parked the lot lizards are sure to be close behind. Not a pretty sight.

  39. southerntragedy on February 27th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Squawk: I think that Mr. Shafer might cave into a F.A.R.T. protest. It contributes to global warming.

Good luck with your concert. I’m pretty sure that all of those people are now dead. Who’s gonna take their place? Noboby. Sigh…..At least I recommended Jimmy Vaughn. Afterall, I’ve got the blues…I have no heritage….
