Primary Election Open Comment Thread

BRAMANTI UPDATES (7:31 p.m.): As of this writing, Obama is leading Clinton 58-41. Huckabee has about a third of the GOP vote. And I’m happy to report that our campaign of voter suppression against Ron Paul is working, helped by our close friends at Diebold.
BRAMANTI UPDATES (8:11 p.m.): Here’s a rundown of some key local races, with early votes in:
- County Judge: Emmett leads Bacarisse, 58-42 percent
- District Attorney: Siegler leads Lykos, 40-35 percent
- U.S. Senator: By some weird fluke, Larry Kilgore snagged 15 percent of the vote?! Cornyn wins.
- U.S. House, District 22: Olson is leading. Manlove, Sekula-Gibbs and Herbacek are in a 3-way tie for 2nd.
- U.S. House, District 14: RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL, 68-32 percent.
- Texas House, District 130: Fletcher leads Van Arsdale, 55-45 percent.
BENZION ADDS (8:23 p.m.): As a courtesy to the long-suffering Bob42, the Peden campaign blogad has been pulled.
Let the healing begin.
RICKG ADDS (9:34 p.m.): Kilgore us up to 17%. Is Cornyn in trouble?
McCain has clinched. Huckabee was giving a concession speech and was telling a long-winded story about baseball player George Brett, but I didn’t get to hear the conclusion because my wife got annoyed and changed the channel.
TV news stories are now talking about problems at some Dem caucuses. Police have been called but it’s unclear what’s going on. It appears that caucuses have been delayed seriously because the regular voting took so long. Some lady is now telling Channel 11 that she is still waiting outside with others for the caucusing to begin - several hours late.
BRAMANTI ADDS (9:39 p.m.): Several readers have asked where to find the most up-to-date results as they come in. The Texas Secretary of State site appears to be overwhelmed. I’m monitoring KHOU and the Harris County Clerk’s Office.
RICKG ADDS (9:45 p.m.): HillObama in a dead heat currently. There are already accusations of voting irregularities flying between the Dem camps. See here.
10:17 p.m.
Here is the story on Huckabee giving up. He called McCain and said he would “do everything possible to unite our party.”
RICKG ADDS (10:35 p.m.): It appears Hillary has stopped the bleeding. After the race in Ohio tightened up, the Dems broke for her in the late going - with 68% of the vote in, she has an impressive 56% to 42% lead. She is neck-in-neck with Obama in Texas and could pull it out. If she does, has she become the second Clinton “Comeback Kid”?
RICKG ADDS (10:45 p.m.): Obama is addressing supporters in San Antonio. He effectively conceded Ohio and said Texas’ results probably won’t be known until the morning. Of course, he added the obligatory “yes, we can” in Spanish. The man can talk longer without saying anything than anyone I can think of at the moment.
RICK ADDS (11:20 p.m.): Ron Paul is cleaning up in his congressional district, with about two-thirds of the vote. Curiously, he is underperforming in the presidential race, with under 5%. That’s less than he’s gotten in a number of other states.
Hillary has opened up a 50,000-plus vote lead on Obama in Texas. However, 35% of the votes are still to be counted. She is maintaining her 14 percentage point lead in Ohio (where she was projected as winner long ago) with over 80% of the votes counted.
I wonder which side is winning the fistfights at the caucuses.
BRAMANTI UPDATES (11:57 p.m.): Congratulations to Allen Fletcher, who’s on pace to unseat Corbin Van Arsdale. Memo to ostensibly Republican legislators: Don’t raise taxes, or we will fire you.

Lord, give me the strength to not throw anything at the TV or the computer!
Vote
Regardless of the presidential primary results tonight, at least we can look forward to the absence of the Peden for Congress blog ad tomorrow.
Ha, Bob. Firefox + ad block = a wonderful thing!
Just need to figure out how to get rid of that Taste of Texas in the banner!
GA that’s blasphemy.
It’s an unsolicited ad that makes me crave tasty and juicy cuts of meat…often late at night or at random times in the middle of the afternoon. It is wrong and must be stopped!
Matt, bullshoot - according to the post debate polls, Ron Paul is going to win in a landslide.
This is a little bit scary– as a courtesy to bob42, I tried to take the Peden ad down a few minutes ago… and my command doesn’t seem to be registering with blogads.
(Yes, I’ve cleared cache.)
In the past, it has taken a little while… so we’ll see.
The poll is maybe that Paul will lose by 70% to 30% in running for President in his own congressional district.
They will vote for Paul for congress
but not for president
I’m not seeing the Peden ad anymore - so something must’ve worked, LST Group.
9. I appreciate that, LST Group Post
It looks like your efforts were successful. I’ve also noticed that blogad is a bit sluggish on the admin side of things.
POLITICALLY INCORRECT MOMENT
Corbin Van Arsdale is a caricature name from some B movie and Manlove, ‘how do you do’, I would have changed my name.
I just got home from my precinct meeting, and am going to the next meeting March 29. All 7 of us are going. That’s right 7 people showed up.
BTW, where are the results updates coming from? Not the Chron. Lots of goose eggs there.
Well let’s see…everyone wrote off Huckabee this morning and afternoon, Edd & Pat in particular, Dan wrote him off earlier even though “supporting him”. Now he’s on the cusp of bailing and everyone who hated McCain now loves him. What a crock!! I think if KSEV had embraced Mike, Texas could have made a difference, now we have McCain. Whoopeeeeeeeeeeee! And Bob Dole will be his VP. I am so excited. Let me go throw up.
#14 AW - I gotcha beat! We had four show up. I was the chairman. Three of us are going to the district convention. The guy that was late is an alternate. The Demos were in the room next to us and it was SRO. But I expected that here in the barrio.
Hamous, I will see you there!!!! You know, we had dems come to try to caucus at our meeting……. but they moved their meeting and no one knew where it was. Some calls were made, and we sent them on their way, hopefully to the right location.
As a courtesy to any democrats who might be blogging here tonight, here’s the official directions to your democratic precinct caucus:
thank you republicans for voting!
Dang, I voted for the black guy like they told me to (Alan Keyes), but I can’t seem to find out how large his winning percentage is going to be - or even the number of votes he’s getting. Is this some conspiracy or something? BTW, I promised I wouldn’t vote until I got my check from the government, but I did anyway - and sure enough, they still didn’t credit my bank account with my $300. That’s it - if I don’t get the $300 by November they can just kiss my vote good-bye.
#21 Rastus
According to the numbers at KHOU.com your guy has Giuliani beat 492 to 268…
Obama stole the vote?
Is the Clinton camp worried about Texas?
Anyone know where to find current results for Texas House Districts? The Chron and local stations still showing 0% return.
I went to the KTRH (radio) website, which had a link to the Secretary of State’s website. It had a lot more non-zero data than our local Pravda did.
Notice that all of the voting irregularities are on the Dem side?
only 12% of TX-12 voted for Paul for president so far
i mean tx-14
Report:
We just got back from the caucus in our precinct and it was a rocking success.
All resolutions passed with no objections - totally unanimous.
Summarily, they are as follows:
1. No Win War
2. TTC (to get it ON the ballot of the next primary election so we as citizens can vote yes or no)(thank you southerntragedy)
3. Initiative & Referendum (thank you again, southerntragedy)
4. Retirement and Social Security for our Teachers (from a school teacher)
5. Adopting 2004 Republican Party Platform for 2008.
6. Declaring English as the official language.
All successful. I presented 2 & 3.
Thank you to all of you who have given me the opportunity to get educated - hubby went reluctantly too and enjoyed it as well(we love learning) about a caucus and how important it is to get involved so we can preserve our rights and improve our lives.
We had 16 people volunteer to be delegates to the District Convention to be held on March 29, 2008 at Grace Community Church on the Gulf Freeway. I was asked to go, but had to decline as hubby is having major surgery to be scheduled in late March or sometime in April.
More sometime tomorrow.
southerntragedy…please read your e-mail.
Vlou, you are MOST welcome, shuuug!
Dang, seems like we’re gonna have us a County-Ha-Ha!!
Bob42, DJ, et al…..Ahem, congrats to all of you!/giving big ol’ hug
#5 GA - This works for me…

Dear Contributors: Thanks for you update, but could you please provide oxygen before you post the “updates”?
Kilgore at 17 percent? Huh!
What? Huckabee is conceeding? I did not just hear that.
Consider the source…
RickG: Where didja hear that?
Strange that the State Rep District 130 race numbers have not been updated at all since 7:25pm with the 55% Fletcher 45% Van Arsdale numbers. I’ve checked all the local news websites that I can think of, and all either have those same numbers or they have 0 for each. (And Fox 26 have it as a race between Fletcher and “Arsdale”)
35, st
See the update of this post - I provide a link.
Yes, I attended my precinct’s convention, and I was elected as a delegate. Of course, it wasn’t hard with 10 ppl for 17 spots.
I thought about presenting a resolution opposing the NAU, but I didn’t feel like writing it out in triplicate.
#38: Dang, you need to prepare more. I just hit “click” and print (6 copies). Gave some to the wrong voting place, ’cause I had extra!
Your resolution sounds interesting~
#39: Well, I didn’t know. This one guy made a resolution that marriage is God-ordained and should only be between man and woman. He wrote his out on copy paper 3 times.
…Waiting for talk radio tomorrow patting themselves on the back for keeping Hillary in it. Those important races down the ballot be damned.
I am going to bed…very tired after all this Obama/Clinton whatchamacallit.
Will check it out early a.m. tomorrow.
#38 I’m in the same boat as you CM - we had an overwhelming 5 people for 4 delegate spots. I hate living in such a heavily democratic district, but it will be interesting to be a delegate (never done this before).
Anyone know much about TJ Baker Holm that is running for Sheila Jackson Lee’s spot? I voted for her this morning after reading up on her positions.
We need to get a tally of LSTers who are delegates. So far we have:
American Woman
tedtam
Southerntragedy
Nat Pierce
Cajun Maverick
raiderdav
Hamous
Did I miss anyone?
My wife and I attended our precinct convention and we are both delegates!! 12 people showed up for our precinct with 16 delegate spots up for grabs.
Dang Hammie. You need a thread tomorrow. This is very interesting!
From over at reason.com
Hey guys! I just got back, if you remember I worked a different election than I live in. However when I took a brief break to vote I asked the girl who was going to be at the meeting tonight to put my name down as a delegate so I am a delegate! I don’t know how many showed up there but we had something like 19 show up for the one I worked and so they have all 16 delegates plus a couple of alternates.
Who in tarnation is voting for the wacko shelley sucko-gibbs? ARRRRGGGHH!
I messed up the prior linky. This one works. Maybe
I want to address the comment about the police and the democrat caucuses. I was at a democrat precinct that two precincts combined. They had over 400 people come vote in person. Not sure how many early votes (both precinct combined I believed it was 500 votes both dem and republican. Voting continued for about 30 minutes after the polls closed. Outside, there were well over 300 people waiting for the caucus to start. The had to switch to the cafeteria to accommodate every one. One precinct seemed to go smoothly. The other seemed to have troubles from the word go. One young lady apparently was making her self a nuisance by interrupting. Apparently she called the constables twice to have the Temporary chairman arrested. Nothing came of it but it made things quite heated and things did not move smoothly. they did not have enough sign in log sheets. The visiting precinct chairman kept asking me for a copy machine and had to tell them it was in the school office and it is locked but I managed to find them some school notebook paper.
Okay, so you may be asking how do I know so much and did I vote for a Dem. The answer is No I did not vote for a Dem, I was working for the Republican party at the poll. It just happens I know my democratic counterpart well and he filled me in. The visiting chair man was very pushy. When the polls closed and they were starting their caucus, he need chairs. He came to the voting area where were trying to finish our paper work stating he needed ALL the Chairs so his people can sit. Told him he can have all but the two which were occupied by the most crucial personell, ones who were reconciling the logs nad the books. He was little huffy about that but oh well.
Tired, need to sleep. I am a republican, someone has to work for a living!
Congrats to LST folks who are now convention delegates. Good job out there.
Wonder how many who crossed over to vote in the Dem primary went to the caucuses tonight–in disguise of course. Things must be rockin’ and rollin’ over there.
Hope state party brass pay attention to the resolution votes and impress upon candidates that the villagers are restless and hunting for pitchforks….
Meglet: That is fanTABulous! You go girl! We have 9 delegates and 4 were only voted in, we’ve got to pull 5 delegates outa our butt!
No worries. I’ve got a few already in mind!
Never underestimate the power of a small, minority, town. Today was a facade. Next primary, I’m there!!!!
Gag me. With a spoon.
My #54 was in reference to ron paul, not you, ST.
#44 - HAMOUS - You can add me to your list of delegates, please.
#47 -BOB$42 - I sure hope Paul stays in; his ideas need to be heard and I’de like to see him speak at the RNC. Still I will understand if he doesn’t stay. I hate that he’s only pulling in 5% in Texas (so far) but I am VERY pleased that he whipped Pedey-boy’s butt (bigtime!) and will retain his Congressional seat. As to the third party run - I don’t think he’ll change his mind about that…but who knows?
#51 Tektite: No worries. This is a strange election. Next time will be better, shuuug.
I’m sorry that there was problems. Thank you for your volunteer work, but hang in there, O.k.?
#55: It’s o.k.!
#56 Shiner, at the risk of starting something like a conspiracy theory, I thought it was odd that there weren’t more Ron Paul ads on the media. Could his campaign be reserving its resources for something else?
$57 ST, yes it is a strange election.
Uhhh, the one’s that don’t have jobs? Most people that had to be at work in the AM left already.
/that wasn’t snarly, was it?
odd….Rod Paul’s Congressional District 14 dont want him as President
but reelected him to Congress
Tx-14 Totals
John McCain…..46.79%
Mike Huckabee…..30.59%
Ron Paul,…..11.41%
267 of 269 Precincts (99.26%)
The Larry Kilgore for US Senate campaign wants to thank all those who voted for him in the GOP Primary. We are enthused and encouraged as our campaign had an uncompromising Biblical and Constitutional message and received approximately 18% of the vote. We hope this will encourage others to run for public office and to vote principle over politics.
