As we noted here, 7 year old Tanner Monk was mauled to death by pit bulls. Maybe, just maybe, the arrests of the owners of these beasts will give pause to other irresponsible owners because the penalty is steep.
Both Smith and Watson are charged with a dog attack resulting in death, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. The law went into effect in September 2007.
Perhaps Kelley Siegler would consider prosecuting these two numbskulls.

Why is this only a second degree felony? These dogs are like self-firing automating-targeting weapons. Failure to control a pit bull that results in death should be close to murder.
Good to see the grand jurors took action quickly and recommended charges against the dog owners. The comments in the link above are rightfully harsh with one waffling exception–there’s one in every crowd I guess. Will be interesting to follow the trial(s).
Only 20 years ? Maybe for each one of them !
I think Ms. Siegler let the office, didn’t she?
She left the Harris County DA’s office and is looking for work. This is in Abilene.
Criminal Stupidy should be a captial offense if you ask me, and it might even begin to remove the irresponsible types in our collective gene pool.

Yep. Too stupid to live. Shoot him.
I dare not imagine what the 8 year old boy went through from the pitbull attack. From the first reporting of this story on LSt I sensed irresponsibility on part of the owner. Knowing what these dogs’ characters are (these specific dogs, not pitbulls in general, that topic was blogged about already), the owner should have taken extra precautions against these dogs getting out and roaming free on the streets.

This one happened recently and the little girl is clinging to life. Sad

There was a pit loose in my neighborhood recently. I called animal control. They were supposed to have come and picked up the dog. I haven’t seen it since. However, another neighbor said they called them and were told to capture the dog themselves. I’ll call again if I see it and if I’m told that, I’ll just shoot the dog if I have to. Summer’s coming and I don’t want my kid or any of my neighbor’s kids to die by having their throat ripped out by someone’s viscous pet. My kid has more of a right to live than your fookin’ dog!
Viscous pet should be viscious pet. Meaning aggressive not greasy, but I will make a greasy spot out of it!!!!
Fasternu, just ensure you eliminate the animal from a concealed place, so that self same law enforcement who didn’t pick up the dog doesn’t arrest you for dispatching the critter as required.
I agree with Big45, do an inconspicuous disposal.
They didn’t specify whether I should capture the animal dead or alive. A dead pit bull is easier to hand over to the proper authorities.
There’s an animal control officer that lives across the street and about four houses down. I don’t know him, but maybe I ought to get to know him. See if he’s keen on a pit bull running loose in his neighborhood, he has little ones too.
Sometimes I need to remember that I advocate lethel injection instead of covering them in blood and throwing them into a pen full of hungry pit bulls.

It does sound like this dog should not have been in this area.
I still think pit bulls should be treated just like dangerous exotic animals such as tigers. If you want to keep one, you first get a license from the county, then build a proper locking enclosure to keep it in, then get it inspected annually and pay a fee to renew your license. Failure to get a license or keep the animal in the enclosure results in a large fine for the first offense and a larger fine, jail time, and confiscation of the animal on the 2nd offense. If the animal bites or kills somebody outside of the enclosure, you get prosecuted for a 1st degree felony for not keeping a dangerous animal properly under control.
That would completely eliminate all the whining from pit bull owners about how it is just irresponsible owners who cause the problem. If all of the owners are held to the same standard under the law, then there should be no problem.
Pit bulls are so misunderstood! They are just as sweet and lovable as any other dog and would NEVER hurt anything or anybody if they weren’t raised by irresponsible owners and then provoked to attack by innocent children minding their own business and playing in their own yards.
