  3. Big45Iron on July 15th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Of course HoustonDem, Gadboy, and AF will promote this as being just fine. And they wonder why we don’t take them and the Comical seriously.

Used to work in a circumcision clinic.

Lousy pay but the tips were great.
    Maybe I’ll try this. :)

    #2, I agree Zippy.

I visited strip clubs a few times over the years, mainly out of curiosity. It was interesting at first, but soon I became bored stiff.

I wonder if the state will try to impose its unconstitutional “Pole Tax.”

A $5-per-patron fee on Texas strip clubs has been struck down as unconstitutional by a district judge.

However, the Texas lawmaker who was the primary sponsor of the law wants to revive the fee, dubbed the “pole tax” by some observers (see Texas Taxes Strip Clubs). State Rep. Ellen Cohen has pledged to revive the law, according to the Houston Chronicle, which was intended to raise money for sexual assault programs and health care for the uninsured. The law went into effect on January 1 and was estimated to raise $40 million per year. Texas Governor Rick Perry signed the law last June.

The Texas Attorney General’s office plans to appeal the ruling by Travis County District Judge Scott Jenkins.

bob42, you got stiff at a strip club? Shocking.

  8. Politically FED UP on July 15th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Bob42, would not being “bored stiff” be a good thing in one of those places.

Sorry Hal, please forgive me, I just could not resist

Where in this story did they mention prostitution? I didn’t see that term anywhere in that piece. Kristin never said, nor did Katie. This is about fun and enjoying yourself. It’s alternative life drawing. The comment about the more you tip the more clothes come off is done very tongue in cheek. How does this equate to prostitution?

Compared to other cities the Houston version of Dr Sketchy is quite tame and also a ton of fun. Come out and experience it before you condemn it. There is hardly ever ANY nudity and if it does happen it is only partial. This is not a brothel or a strip club.

    Is this the 1950s?

It seems like a few of you don’t like the Houston Chronicle, don’t read it then and don’t visit their site if it offends you.

    BTW

it’s very hard to see where the real content is on this site and what is advertising. I mean I get that this is a pro-republican site and its all about the money… …I guess my point is ‘I get it you hate Democrats and spending the next 100 years in Iraq is the best idea to get behind’

    http://lonestartimes.com/2008/07/15/bush-lifts-executive-order-ban-on-offshore-drilling/

this post if f-ing stupid. Do you think economics has that of a radical effect due to the changing of the guard in Washington? Come on, get a grip. Pelosi controlled congress is not responsible for the increase in gas prices. Its idiotic statements like this that get the republican party hated and the #1 reason you will lose this election. One thing is for sure your beloved Bush Fed up this country good and will go down in history as the worst president who’s political economic effects will be felt for a 100 years, ain’t that right John McCain

btw John McCain voted for Jesus, he’s that old

I always like the use of profanity to make a point. It shows such a great mastery of the english language, not to mention the hyperbole.

    Oh, by the way -
McCain voting for Jesus shows better judgement than Obama hanging with Wright, Ayers, Reysko et al.

    a crazy canuk

from one crazy canuck to another, you haven’t really proven my argument wrong. You just stated that my use of quasi-profanity is somewhat a sign of my degenerative intelligence.

If your argument is to poke holes in my use of profane words you’ve shown you don’t have a leg to stand on, right a crazy canuCk?

  20. american woman on July 15th, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Jaymac you are correct. We don’t care for the Chronicle. We poke fun at it as often as we can. We do this because we can. Sure, we could refuse to read the poorly written, biased to the point of ridiculous, rag, but we do like to be entertained. This is a blog. It does not have a subscription price. We have a conservative slant. All are welcome to post, but we lean conservative. A newspaper should be unbiased, printing facts. The Chronicle fails miserably at both those things. So, we laugh at it.

That right do so is something I totally believe in but to jump to conclusion about something and state that they are promoting prostitution is extremely immature. I know neither yourself nor the author of this post said those words. I was addressing the five by five. Dr Sketchy is a fun innocent sketch class with a little attitude that we can either agree or disagree with but to make slanderous comments that it promotes prostitution is simply absurd

I made the original comment and then saw the post that had the Oil prices graph and felt compelled to respond to it here. That is my right as well.

Poking fun at a publication is your right and I know you will continue to do so, I am defending Dr Sketchy and the ignorant accusation from people who have never attended one of our events

The Democrats have been aiding and abetting all those factions who oppose any further development of domestic oil and gas fields for approximately 3 decades. There have, to be sure, been northeastern and west coast Republican members of Congress who have allied with them, but the overwhelming cast has been a leftwing one.

The fact the culmination of these failed policies occurred just as Pelosi assumed the Speaker’s seat is a sort of rough justice. They started before she arrived in congress, she supported them, protected them and now she gets to reap what she and her comrades sowed. On a purely technical basis, the graph and what it implies is incorrect, but slamming Nancy with the blame anyway is just the kind of tactic she uses against Republicans every single day. So, no, there is no sympathy for her in this corner.

  23. texpat on July 15th, 2008 at 8:50 pm

I think you are all missing the point here. This whole thing is a scam by monopolist art supply dealers to inflate sales of sketchbooks and sketching pencils. One more example of the capitalistic swine at Texas Art Supply/Swathmore/General Pencil and others manipulating the speculative art gum eraser market. Anybody ever check to see what the foorprint of carbon drawing pencils might be ? Artists poisoning the environment…Big Pharma, Big Oil, Big ArtSupply …..they’re all the same.

  24. texpat on July 15th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

I didn’t want to forget to give credit to the Chronicle for this original, homegrown, locally written piece of reporting. At least they didn’t reach out to Reuters or AFP for coverage and paste up something written by a French guy in Sao Paulo or Madrid.

Surely you’re not saying the left coast & northeastern Republicans are not left-wing are you? There’s lots of evidence to the contrary. There are plenty of southern (esp. southeastern) Democrats well to the right of Olympia Snowe, Lincoln Chafee, et al.

You’re a good sport, we should have a scotch some time.

Let me make this clear, I am not defending the dems, not at all I am just defending the untruths that are spoken here

  27. Big45Iron on July 15th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Has anybody seen any left wing reporters lambasting other left wing reporters for their obnoxious reporting on the death of Tony Snow?

I saw Juan Williams rip the LA Times on their coverage and their allowing of pretty much obscene comments on their website.

Wonder if Olbermann has finished his orgasm yet?

  29. Sirrus Rider on July 15th, 2008 at 11:52 pm

Uh.. Big Jolly where in that entire article did it say anything about prostitution? Or infer that what was going on is pornography? Have you been to the Houston Museum of Fine Art lately?

All this group that is being written about is offering the same thing that would go on in a figure drawing class at one of the local colleges. Or are you also desiring that classical art education not be taught as well? What is going on is not a cheap peep show or for that matter live sex show. Only the truly puritanical, immature, and low brow would try to make it out as such.

I’ll admit I’m not much for public nudity either; however, I get the rationale behind the Comical’s piece. This was an article alerting artists to this event.. People who know how to draw or even those who just think they do and making them aware that it will be going on. Will perverts be there? I wouldn’t be surprised if one or two showed up; however, you better know if someone is a disruptive influence at the event they’ll be ejected so fast their head will spin. Figure drawing classes (and this probably qualifies as such) are tightly controlled
Is it the place where I myself would go hang out? No Not really it’s not my thing and I know I couldn’t draw my way out of a paper bag.

The Comical might be nothing but fish wrap, but in this case I have to defend them. They may be lefty and they can’t be everything to all people, but this event they are reporting is something that is legitimately cultural. If you don’t like it then fine, stay home and don’t attend it. That’s my own personal plan.

If you feel figure drawing is not legitimate art then I suggest you go tour the Vatican or some of the other old world churches, and the local Art Museum where you see plenty of examples of the human form either lightly or completely undraped.

If you have the time and inclination, this is one of my favorite bars. I’ll have to decline the scotch since I never touch the stuff, but I do like vodka. Otherwise it will have to wait until I come down to Houston.

On another note, you might be interested to know, Big Jolly is a musician, a guitar collector and authority on live music venues in the Houston area. On any given night, he can be found fraternizing with immoral, dissipated pickers and fans in dens of iniquity all over town.
