In today’s Chronicle, the editors commend Pope Benedict on environmental updates he’s made to the Vatican.
And of course, they demand that the Catholic Church change its doctrine to reflect their views that there are just too many babies out there:
If there is any quibble with the pope’s environmental point of view, it is his stance on birth control. If Pope Benedict desires to make a more substantial impact on global conservation of resources, he should reconsider the church’s prohibitions on contraception.
The church’s blessing on the use of modern, reliable birth control would help many women plan the size of their families. That would be a boon to their maternal health, their children’s well-being and the sustainability of a healthy planet.
Hell, while we’re demanding revisions to the Church’s moral stance, let’s reconsider the prohibition on genocide. Think of how many tons of CO2 we could save!

I’m thinking the Chron is way out of its league in dictating anything to Pope Benedict. It is a very uneven intellectual match, fellas, and you are on the losing end.
This is another example of people’s misunderstanding of the Church. The Church is not here to explain or mold public policy. The Church is here to express immutable Truth to those who are willing to accept it.
The Church is the bedrock upon which society should and must be built.
Yep, maybe we need some more wars to weed out some of the eaters and breeders. That’ll help out the planet.

Always looking out for your poignant comments. LOL
I want more babies in my home. Mrs. Darren10, however, objects. What’s a man to do?
“Multiply and replenish the earth” doesn’t mean “Don’t multiply and restrict the earth of babies”.
Gee, now the Pope has to rethink this whole Respect Life business. Bummer. but I’m sure he’ll be quick to follow the Chron’s advice.
Birth control is a weak underbelly of Roman Catholcism; male priests/deacons only is another. Anti-gay marriage, anti homosexuality, anti-Roe v Wade, etc., pretty soon, one has to really become naive on justice and fairness to be reconciled with the Church. However, Protestants & Evangelicals are cut from the same cloth, except maybe for the acceptance of birth control.
But don’t ask too many questions. Just be patient. They’ll all be answered in the Sweet-Bye-n-Bye…
Stan - The Church has been around for 2000 years or so. If you spent the rest of your life I seriously doubt you could enumerate the positive effects that the Church and Christian religion have had on civilization. If you choose not to accept their beliefs, fine. But, just out of curiosity, where do your definitions of justice and fairness come from?
I don’t denigrate the RC Church, or Christianity. Yes, many truths about justice and fairness come from Holy Scripture. But many doctrines that express discrimination and favoritism are found there too. The first and easiest to interpret is the express prejudice against women as described in Genesis where “Eve” was powerless to resist the charms of the “serpent”. Adam (representing all men) was cuckold by serpent envy.
