Today’s Chronicle has an editorial with the following title:
First casualty
The facts of the nasty little war in Georgia are hard to come by
That’s very true, especially if you rely on the Houston Chronicle for facts:
Even before the first shot was fired, Russian hackers sabotaged Georgian Internet sites while President Putin marshaled forces on Georgia’s border and assigned targets for bombers and warships in the Black Sea.
The editors of the city’s only daily newspaper apparently haven’t heard that Dmitry Medvedev has been the president of Russia for more than four months, or that Vladimir Putin is prime minister.

They’re still enthralled by W.R. Hearst’s poetry….
It’s a wise decision to NEVER rely on the Houston Chronicle for facts…..only opinions….and those are usually lifted from the NY Times, the LA Times, AP, etc……. not an original thought in the building. Their stories are sometimes kinda fun to read, but you just can’t take them seriously. Pity.
The Crummyicle knows who is really leading that country so they corrected the facts. Now, we need the liberals and “BO” to step up and tell us what we should do since they were critical of the President’s actions in the war in Iraq. Come on “BO” act Presidential. I can hear “BO”s answer now, let the mighty UN take care of this matter even if Russia gobbles up all those countries. By the way “BO” just how many countries can Russia grab up before we do anything or do we just act like isolationists.

As far as I can see, isn’t that exactly what GWB is doing? He is after all the Commander in Chief, whereas McCain and Obama are merely applying for the job. The Secretary of Defense has just stated there will be no military action on our part.
I not a fan of GWB, but right not the the only decision that counts will come from “The Decider” and not “The Pretenders”.
It has been my observation that candidates rarely execute their campaign promises to the letter after they get into the Oval Office, which is kind of lucky for we the people at times. It is comforting to know at least they don’t believe half the cr@p they are spouting.
Remember Bush Sr.’s promise of “Read my lips. No New Taxes.”

TEO did say the UN should step in and have a commission & peace keeping forces put in place.
One thing, though. His staff screwed up again, because Russia holds a permanent UNSC seat and the veto that goes with it, meaning the UN cannot get involved unless the Russians go along. That’s as likely as snowfall in Houston tomorrow.
And now the Russians are threatening Poland.
#4: Good point:
GWB is the Commander and Chief and will to be until someone else is elected. Doesn’t matter what the contenders say, they have no power to do anything until they are elected and take office.Even then, only with congressional approval. All this “If I were President” verbage is just that, verbage. What we need to deal with is the here and now, not what the candates are “going to do”, if they are elected. That’s next year….and it will be an interesting time in our history. God bless us all.
As long as we have a spineless Congress, it will make no difference who is President, we are not going to war for any reason. That includes any terrorist attacks on our homeland because in the immortal words of “BO” (or was it John Flip/Flop Kerry) let it go thru the world court system and the UN to resolve.
Robert, no, Kerry was the one who compared terrorism to prostitution, and wanted to reduce terrorism to the point of only being a “nuisance”! (see page 6 of the article)
I would love Bush to call the Congress back into session…asking Land-Deal Harry Reid and Nancy P for a resolution for the use of force in this situation. I mean…Congress’ approval is at 17%…how low could it go?

The difference there is that if you wait until the “act” in question happens in one case you might have someone with the clap. In the other case, you have a mile-wide smoking hole where a major city used to be.
8 Robert 1,
You really need to loosen that hatband a bit. I suspect there is very little support amoungst the AMERICAN PEOPLE for intervention in Georgia at this point. You know…those same folks who will go to the polls in November to elect a new Congress and President.
I also suspect the Generals have also informed the Commander in Chief that we would likely get our over-stretched Army’s backsides kicked if we intervene in what is essentially the Russian’s backyard. It is we who would have logistical difficulty in pulling this off.
If GWB could not find support for an invasion of Iran…what the frick make you think there are any votes there to do the same thing in Georgia and end up having to take on the Russian bear?
Their military was in tatters a decade ago….but these guys have been using that oil money to rebuild things….while we have been steadily erroding ours in Iraq and Afganistan.

Add on to No. 10: That’s good that Bush forces the hand of Harry Ridiculous and Nancy PeLOUSY in making a decision on Russia because the Dimwits hate Bush and he has always been damned if does and damned if he doesn’t. I mean if they don’t want another Iraq. I know what Congress will do, they will defer to the almighty UN where Russia can block any action and march on thru as many countries as they want. Maybe Flip/Flop Kerry can go to the World Court and plead their case.
Pity that Houston is the 4th largest city in the country and has a newspaper that is on par with that of a 3rd rate banana republic.
Whitetop, I see no call for you to insult the journalists of third rate banana republics in comparing them to the Comical.
Simple, could you go into some detail regarding how our military has eroded in Iraq and Afghanistan? Here’s what I’m seeing:
1. We now have a large contingent of troops who have experienced the stress of combat and treating wounded.
2. We have improved our equipment.
3. We have improved our logistics.
4. We have the highest retention rate of experienced troops since WW2.
What has eroded? It’s sure not morale.
16 Big,
Then we should have rolled into Iran if all of that was true….

The retention rate for junior officers in the Army is the lowest it has been in a decade. This is a trend that has continued for two years.

Simple, take a peek at the map. We have military in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and the Persian Gulf, and Azerbaijan. That’s all four sides of Iran. Could we possibly be in a better position to go after Iran if we so desire?
And President Bush and the UN have given Iran every opportunity to comply. So if Bush decides to take our Iran’s nuke capability after the election and before he leaves office, then it won’t be a factor in the campaign, and while the usual suspects will jump up and down, everybody will have to concede we did give diplomacy years without result.

And don’t forget our allies India, Turkey and Israel. Iran is boxed up and they know it. It’s one of the reasons they are so belligerent publically.

Also, the Emir of Oman is quite friendly to the US. His country happens to be a few miles across the mouth of the Straits of Hormuz from Iran.
But back to the subject at hand. It is just appalling to me the major daily newspaper in the fourth largest city in America has an editorial board who does not know who holds the office of the President of Russia. It is simply unbelievable to me.
Texpat, I can tell you why they don’t know.
Isn’t the President of Russia - Medevev or something along that line?
I vote to make Big45 President of Russia. He could
assasinateswade Putin to us his country’s resources against Islamists in Iran.As for Georgia: We don’t have to ivtervene with troops on the ground. We should be at the very least bombing any and all russian positions and arming the Georgian military heavily. This should continue until the Russians unconditionally cease fire AND begin to retreat back to their politically crappy (until Big45 takes over) nation. Also, we should send some battleships ad perhaps an aircraft carrier to Georias’ coast. Any and all Russian boats that enter Gerogian water rights will be treated as hostile and fired upon until destroyed or until the said boats unconditionally retreat. In all situations if our military suspects danger to them, tey woud be free to whatever they determine necessary to erradicate such threat.
So far wussy Bush has managed the Georgians (and I think the Russians as well) to sign a piece of paper. Way to go George. That’s securing democracy!!!
