Well, the bailout bill has passed the Senate. Here are some of the highlights directly from the bill’s text:
- Extension and modification of duty suspension on wool products; wool research fund; wool duty refunds.
- Exemption from excise tax for certain wooden arrows designed by use for children.
- Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addition Equity Act of 2008.
- The control of noxious and exotic weeds.
- Transfer to Abandoned Mine Reclamation Fund.
Oh, and the mortgage industry is effectively nationalized, allowing the Secretary of Treasury to change the terms of home loans at will:
Upon any request arising under existing investment contracts, the Secretary shall consent, where appropriate, and considering net present value to the taxpayer, to reasonable requests for loss mitigation measures, including term extensions, rate reductions, principal writedowns, increases in the proportion of loans within a trust or other structure allowed to be modified, or removal of other limitation on modifications.
But hey, at least this isn’t that $700 billion behemoth, no sir. Hank Paulson only gets to put $250 billion on Uncle Sam’s AmEx, unless he says he needs $350 billion. But that’s all! Unless the President sends a letter to Congress and waits 15 days. It’s kind of like the Brady Bill, only it costs seven hundred billion dollars.
Personally, I think this bill isn’t worth the enormous amount of paper it’s printed on. If you agree, call your Representatives and tell them how you feel.
The House switchboard number is 202-224-3121. If you can’t get through, here’s a list of members from Texas. Just click the name to get the number of the district office. That’s your best shot at talking to a real person.
It’s go time, folks.

FWIW, both Sens. Hutchison and Cornyn voted for this marxist monstrosity.
Cornyn and Hutchison catch a lot of unfair flak from conservatives, and I’m usually one to sympathize in their defense. But this time they deserve it all.
I’m usually an optimist, but also realistically know that the Leave No Banker Behind bill will also be passed the house. There’s only a few arms that need to be twisted there.
Nevertheless, please do call your “Rep” and remind them that they work for you, not their party leadership or their favorite lobbyist.
Also please consider that from time to time there are more than two horses in any race, and in the case of our congress, neither nag deserves your vote in the future.
This is insanity…I still say “it stinks”. Mixing other items in it is the Congress’s way of sneaking in their own agendas and it is an insult to our intelligence as voters. They should all be handcuffed and have leg irons put on and wear orange jumpsuits and go where they belong in that garb.
Initial reaction from the cave….
Holeeee crap.
Action to be taken
Burn the phone lines and make a personal call to the local office of my Rep. Gonna be a long day.
Welcome to the United Socialist States of America btw.
Someone tell me that this junk can and will be challenged in court and that it will be shown as unconstituional.
/please
#4 Close, but no cigar… Socialist states typically and wisely nationalize successful industries.
Please send everyone you know to this link for the “Common Sense Fix”:

Then burn up the phones as well. I’m having to call the carpet bagging Nick Lampson, even though I don’t think he’s going to throw Pete Olson a slow pitch over the plate by voting Yes to this mess.
My Rep. is Sheila Jackson-Lee… I usually get the reds dialing her number… gonna save myself some heartache on this and just chew out my Senators.
Daniel, the Senate bill is a done deal.
Call Sheila. Record it and I’ll post it.
One of the best oral presentations on the true nature of the racketeer-influenced, corrupt organization that we call “the state.” The mantra of “change” is just so much phony rhetoric by both candidates seeking to become the next puppet president. Sadly, many Americans fall for this foolish drivel.

The history of governments is a history of lies, thievery and murder. The U.S. government, whether under the control of Democrats or Republicans, is no exception.
I’ll tell you what I’m going to do besides call my rep, although my rep is Culberson, and he looks like a brilliant light in the darkness. I’m going to vote for Noriega. I’m so tired of voting for someone who pretends to be conservative, but disappoints me. If I am going to get someone who acts like a democrat, I’m gonna hire a real one. I’ve never been keen on knock offs, and I don’t need a knock off Democrat. Kay Bailey wants to be our Governor. She will never get my vote. I think I have become an independent after watching the John McCain campaign, and this debacle.
I won’t vote for Noriega or any other Democrat. I’ll be skipping some boxes this year. There may be a few bright spots on the ballot and voting for them while skipping the ones who voted for socialism will send the right message. Voting for Marxists over socialists will give those idiots the idea we agree with them. Skipping the box is effectively voting for Mr. None of the Above.
McCaul’s Office said he is opposed to the bill
Matt,
I called… not much to record, they sure didn’t want to “chat it up” with me, nor I with them.
I couldn’t get an answer out of Culberson’s office and it sure makes me nervous.
