Extraordinary!
On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse - electronically synthesized piano - like a rusty squeezebox.
Then suddenly - high above it - an acoustic guitar, some simple chords, hanging there unwavering, till an automatic drum-beat took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight!
This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I’d never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling.
One hears such sounds and what can one say but…Dan Patrick!

a long long time ago
i can still remember
how i trusted government to do what was right
i believed if i played by the rules
worked real hard and stayed in school
there was nothing i couldn’t do
but september made me shiver
when congress sold us down the river
bad news on the doorstep
they said we couldn’t take one more step
the politicians began to cry
and said everything was falling from the sky
but something angered me deep inside
the day, I found out, they lied
so bye, bye miss american dream
they risked our money on some funny investment schemes
and then good ‘ole boys that were the cause of the crash
singing they got away with the cash
they got away with the cash
were you fooled just like me
and did you vote for bush ‘43?
And did you really believe?
that he would fight for conservative goals
stand tall for our values and be bold
and save our country’s mortal soul
well i know that some still stand by him
’cause i saw them voting in the gym
they kicked off their shoes
’cause they dig the red, white and blue
they said we might be down to out last buck
no loans to buy even a pick-up truck
but I knew we were out of luck
the day i found out they lied
so bye, bye miss american dream
they risked our money on some funny investment schemes
and then good ‘ole boys that were the cause of the crash
they’re singing they got away with the cash
they got away with the cash
helter skelter in summer swelter
politicians looked around for shelter
out on a limb and falling fast
they rolled out a bill that didn’t float
and found out they didn’t have the votes
when the people cried out from the coast
and i watched them on that political stage
and my hands were clenched with fists of rage
they sold us down the drain
and we could feel the pain
jefferson, adams, and monroe
warned us–”don’t let government grow!”
and if they were here they’d say “we told you so”
the day, they found, out they lied
bye, bye miss american dream
they risked our money on some funny investment schemes
and then good ‘ole boys who were the cause of the crash
singing they got away with the cash
they got away with the cash
OK, Senators Whitmire and Ellis, we’re calling you out… let’s see what YOU got!

If you think I’m going to listen to it again–on purpose—you got another thing coming, fella.
Dan sounded like he has spent a lot of time at one of those amateur poetry nights at the college coffee bar.
But Heh ™, it was funny.
He should get a black turtle neck and some round, blue lens shades.
I nearly spit out my water when you were quoting Salieri from Amadeus.
Classic.
Mediocrities everywhere, I absolve you, I absolve you.
I bet he kills next “Open Mic Night” at Hooters.
(Sorry Dan, it’s a blog; got to keep my customers happy.)
Lyrics are good but when I heard Dan sing this yesterday I decided it was not good to listen to while driving. Gotta stay awake while on the road. i was blessed to have only hit a mailbox many years ago after I fell asleep at the wheel.
Dan’s still an outstanding state senator.
Leave it up to Dan Patrick to provide the signal prologue event for the impending Apocalypse.

Huh? You are way too nice, Darren.
But I agree with you on not driving while listening to that song. It should only be listened to while at home with a well-stocked bar.
Well, I had a different take on the song. I know Dan is up late, and I know he is troubled, deeply, by our impending peril. He just put into words what he felt. Granted Tedtam’s muse is better, but he wrote a sad tale of despair.
At the risk of being argumentative: Dan did open the presentation with a statement that he wasn’t much of a singer. Regardless, the lyrics here are the essential element, and the wise Senator Patrick has done an excellent job of condensing the issue into a few refrains of an appropriate melody.

When I listened to this, the name “William Shatner” came to mind.

Or Leonard Nimoy.
Wanna feel old? Don McLean turned 63 years old yesterday.
Wow who did that photoshop? Is he for hire?
It’s an auditory representation of man’s inhumanity to man.
Excellent Fauxtochop, Horatio! I’d hire you in a heartbeat but unfortunately a large portion of my future income has been pre-impounded to pay for someone else’s fire.
