The best of luck, Murray, and to your wife, Sylvia, also.

Wonder how many would C.O. Bradford retain if he would have won.

Most likely if those that were released but theoretically instead were retained would have eventully left on their own or resigned because of the lingering animosity.

  3. hamous on December 3rd, 2008 at 11:02 am

Better watch out Jolly. She may sic Terry on you!

  4. Robert 1 on December 3rd, 2008 at 11:56 am

As bad as Lykos sounds, think about the alternative—Bradford. Oh, my gosh, government has gone to electing the “lesser of two evils”!!!!

  5. Wino on December 3rd, 2008 at 12:08 pm

This is a GREAT IDEA! Let’s put in a DA with ZERO experience, and then watch as she fires everyone in the office with experience. 2009 is the year to try that criminal caper you’ve always envisioned, since there won’t be a competent DA around to prosecute you.

  6. David Benzion on December 3rd, 2008 at 12:23 pm

Thanks BigJolly, you’re getting me in trouble again with your Lykos-bashing posts.

FWIW, I attended an (outdoor) event recently and got to sit across the table from Lykos… she was perfectly pleasant to me until she heard I was behind LoneStarTimes.com, at which point she exclaimed “You’all write some NASTY things about me!”

Thankfully, Doug Miller and Bob Martin were able to restrain her from lunging across the table and slicing my neck with her shattered wine glass… but it was a few minutes before things calmed down and I could explain that individual writers on LST express their own opinions, and don’t necessarily speak for the blog as a whole, and now that she has won we wish her every success and will be happy to assist her pursuit of justice however we can help.

[Note: Some of the previous paragraph is completely made up for dramatic effect.]

Anyway, she actually related to me in a perfectly nice manner, is clearly bright, and passionate about justice… I also enjoyed her crusty demeanor and non-stop chain-smoking… because truth be told, I WANT my District Attorney to be a bit of an Old-School Big-City Bastard.

She seems to fit that bill perfectly.

Attention DA Investigators: Please contact me at lsteditors at gmail.com for additional info re: BigJolly’s actual identity.

  7. David Benzion on December 3rd, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Let me also add this–I strongly preferred Kelly Siegler for DA, think Murray Newman is a wonderful fellow, and am disgusted with the tactics used by some of Lykos’ campaign allies.

But she won, and she’s not Bradford, so I’m willing to give her a chance to succeed.

  8. wfish on December 3rd, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Give her a chance! She won the election and has a perfect right to choose her staff…no questions asked. Better than Bradford? You bet! How much better remains to be seen. She is the DA until voted out. Let her do it HER way, then pass judgement. Re-elect or vote her out. But for now…..she’s it. Give her a chance.

  9. BigJolly on December 3rd, 2008 at 12:35 pm

I also enjoyed her crusty demeanor and non-stop chain-smoking

LOL, that was in my original draft. As in, she smiled with her chain smoking stained….

    Give her a chance.

    No.

BJ - Check out the Sheriff’s office and find out how many of the Chiefs and Majors have decided to retire on Dec. 31. They are appointed and want to retire at their current salaries, not be demoted back to Captains where the retirement income would suffer. This is a normal procedure that happens in any climate where people are appointed. The constables offices do not have civil service and when a new constable is elected all deputies are also subject to replacement. This doesn’t mean the newly elected DA, Sheriff, or Constable (as the case may be) is crooked or inept, it is simply the way things are. Look at Obama - he’s going to replace all but Robert Gates. (and no, I don’t like Obama)

  11. Wino on December 3rd, 2008 at 12:48 pm

Hmm…. bank robbery is out. That’s federal, and Lykos won’t be prosecuting.

Maybe armed robbery… Hey, Matt! Where were you conked on the noggin, again? I don’t want to get into a turf war, y’know.

  12. wfish on December 3rd, 2008 at 2:23 pm

Sorry, BJ, you have to give her a chance. She is (or will be) the DA as elected by the people and has every right to pick and choose her staff and workers. Bad mouthing her now is premature….wait until she’s actually taken office. Then, if her office isn’t up to snuff, let her have it! But for now, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Might be better than you think. We can always hope…..

“I’m not going to be critical of individuals — I’m not going to bad mouth anyone,” Lykos said.

Lykos will not bad mouth or be critical of them.

She will replace, remove and start with an office with no experience whatsoever if she has her way about it. The DA’s office will become one of the least effective DA offices in the country.

Hide and watch, Kelly would have been the answer to the successfull prosecution of the criminals in Harris County..

  14. Dov on December 3rd, 2008 at 3:08 pm

I tried to edit my own post of # 13 however I was told I did not have permission to do so. What I should have posted was

Kelly would have been the answer to the successfull prosecution of the criminals in Harris County. If I were a criminal in Tarrant County I would strongly consider moving to Harris County.

Hide and watch, in the next election a Dem will use statistics to get Lykos out. Such as “The conviction rate before Lykos was a great number of “$% whatever” and since Lykos the conviction rate has plummeted to “*&^”

  15. wfish on December 3rd, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Dov: could be, but Kelly didn’t get elected. For now, Lykos is our DA. …like it or lump it….you can’t do anything about it until the next election and only then if she’s done a poor job. As the law of the old west put it ” Give her a fair trial and then hang her”. Seems to be what I’m seeing here, but without the fair trial.

  16. Dov on December 3rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm

    wfish

I shall do exactly that however I “think” Lykos is going to drop the conviction numbers and open the door for someone to take her place next election.

She’ll get a fair trial and hang herself.

  17. american woman on December 3rd, 2008 at 5:07 pm

My boss has a Lykos sticker on his front door! I’m a wait and see person on this one too. I hope she does well. I think it’s normal to replace opposition. Crusty, fine with me as long as she puts the bad guys away.

  18. hamous on December 3rd, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Thankfully, Doug Miller and Bob Martin were able to restrain her from lunging across the table and slicing my neck with her shattered wine glass

Having watched Patty do the Thorazine Shuffle through the district convention this spring I find it hard to imagine her lunging anywhere, except maybe trying to grab the dancing pink polka-dotted dwarf elephants buzzing around her head. A whirling dervish she ain’t.

  19. Phil_M on December 3rd, 2008 at 9:41 pm

Just be thankful that she’s not C.O. Bradford, and pray that she’s shed herself of Terry Lowry.

Sure, Lykos is clearing out some of the current Republican prosecutors, and replacing them with other Republicans. It sucks, but It could’ve been much worse.

It could have been ALL of the Republican prosecutors.

And their replacements could have come from such applicant pools as the in-house legal department at METRO, the sex offender defense attorney section of the yellow pages, the Harris County ACLU membership roll, and the bottom 10% of last year’s graduating class at TSU law school.

  20. hamous on December 3rd, 2008 at 9:47 pm

And let’s not forget the man who made this all possible.

  21. Phil_M on December 3rd, 2008 at 9:51 pm

#3 - Now THAT is a scary proposition. He is one creepy fellow.

BigJolly - If you see him in your neighborhood, remember the rule: don’t talk to strangers.

Didn’t you get the “genuine real true conservative” memo ? Anything less than a full glass is no glass at all. You are not allowed to be grateful for lesser favors.

Enjoy your RINOs as the party crumbles because it isn’t true to its own platform.

This is just like the Catholic debacle, but political. They let the priests get away with pedophilia, and are now trying to recover from it, at great financial cost as well as faith in the institution due to their own actions, which went against their statements/preachings.

I’m sure there are a lot of ex-altar boys who wish the church would’ve stopped this early on.

Apparently you’re with the “at least he didn’t kill them after he had sex with them” silver lining crowd. Half measures don’t quite seem to do the job for some of us.

“Other than that thing with the altar boys, he was a good priest.”
“Other than voting pro-abortion, Kay’s a good Senator.”
“Other than the government growth and debt-ridden spending, they were a good GOP Congress.”
“Other than his Medical, education, and immigration policies, Bush was a good president.”

I dunno. I think a little more ethical purity, party loyalty, or just plain ol’ “doing what you said you would do” would go a long way.

Texpat, you’re starting to sound like an apologist.

I don’t have a problem with any administration chooses to bring its own people on board - whether it’s the president with his cabinet and US attorneys, governors or mayors with their advisors, or a District Attorney. It surely happens all the time. I’m not sure I understand the shock and surprise.
